Juice therapy, lard treatment and other traditional medicine tips that should not be trusted
At the end of June, the entire family in Khabarovsk was in serious condition in the hospital: they were “treated” by larvae of parasite worms. The variety of methods of traditional medicine in the era of the “enlightened Internet” today is unlikely to surprise anyone. Many of us have repeatedly resorted to popular methods of treating ailments, “innocuous” cold or even flu, often, alas, without thinking about the consequences. On the “harmful advice” of “traditional medicine”, which should not be followed – in the material doctors clinic MEDSI.A sadly renowned family from Khabarovsk took a remedy containing Trichinella larvae. Most likely, people did not suspect that they take parasites. In general, in this situation, there are more questions than answers, says Konstantin Shcheglov, physician of the department of unloading and dietary therapy at the Medsi Otradnoe Rehabilitation Center: “Some veterinarian who takes care of people’s treatment, a self-produced“ vaccine ”is unknown for what, living trichinae larvae obtained from somewhere.
Why do people trust questionable “popular methods”
Why do such cases happen more often? They were not uncommon before. First, because of dissatisfaction with the results of treatment by generally accepted medical methods. We know that many diseases are chronic and not completely cured. At the same time, many patients, due to the significant influence of the media, in such cases begin to believe in the effectiveness of the so-called “popular” means – sometimes, alas, at the cost of their own health.
Secondly, qualified medical care is not always available, especially in the regions. Therefore, people who do not want to waste time visiting a specialist, who sometimes needs to go to a reception in another locality, self-medicate and seek help from alternative means.
In my practice, there were cases when I observed both positive and negative results of such treatment. Here we must understand that there are no good or bad treatments. There are unqualified performers. Any impact that leads to a change in the state of the body can be used for treatment. The question of time, place and dose. Anything that can be a cure can be poison. Therefore, only a person who has the qualifications and experience of treatment by any particular means can take on the treatment of patients. In inexperienced hands, any treatment can lead to opposite expected results. And the stronger the treatment, the more dangerous it is.
What is the difference between “traditional medicine” from this
Yulia Chernyad’eva, cardiologist at the Medsi Clinic on Solyanka: “I often talk with my patients on similar topics related to the“ good advice ”of my acquaintances in treating a particular disease, ask: what is the difference between a neighbor / veterinarian / work colleague who recommended medicine, from, actually, a doctor? The main difference: they are not responsible for what they recommend (as opposed to the doctor). Such advice is given for various purposes: one of the best motives can do it (“It helped me, and it will help you”), and someone from frankly selfish — for example, various healers, as well as sellers of food additives, many of whom work on the principle of multi-level marketing. The doctor has the right to treat patients and, most importantly, bears full responsibility for what he has appointed. And in his appointments, the doctor is guided by the principles of evidence-based medicine, in which, as we understand, there are not and can not be any vaccines with trichinae and similar “wonderful” methods of treatment.
It cannot be said that such cases of self-treatment acquire the character of a stable trend. There has always been a certain segment of the population that is set up on conditionally traditional medicine.
So why buy more dietary supplements, and not proven to be effective as a result of clinical trials of drugs? If we take any drug, even the same aspirin, and read the list of side effects and contraindications, it will be on two sheets. And the extract of the magic grass is possible for everyone and everything. Why is that? Because with this medication, studies were conducted in which thousands of patients from all over the world were included. If at least one in 10 thousand patients had a side effect, the manufacturer must specify it. But in principle, a side effect can be anything. Take a bag of milk – what a terrible thing! And milk protein is there, and lactose … – someone may have anaphylactic shock! But the instructions on the 2 sheets to the package of milk is not for some reason.
If the drug interferes with the metabolism, that is, it works – of course, side effects are possible. And if it is possible for everyone and there are no side effects, it means that the preparation does not work in the body. Helped? The placebo effect has not been canceled.
In many ways, the fascination with many folk remedies can be explained by the ineradicable belief in a miracle. The person, in essence, is lazy and wants, without putting efforts, having drunk a wonderful pill, to recover immediately from everything.
